The Conventional Approach

Your thyroid system is complex. Typically, doctors only order TSH, or maybe also T4. Your labs may look normal for these tests, but in reality, there are several other markers that can reveal if your thyroid isn’t functioning properly.

Have you ever:

  • been told your blood tests look fine even though you feel bad, or
  • been on thyroid medication without feeling better

If so, you know first hand that the mainstream approach to thyroid care misses a lot of people.

There is more to the thyroid system than TSH, and there is more to thyroid health than a prescription – or radiation, or surgical removal.

What is Hashimoto’s?

The number one most misdiagnosed thyroid condition in the US is an autoimmune disease called Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. Hashimoto’s is not really a thyroid condition at all – it’s an immune system condition.

Sadly, the conventional approach to treat Hashimoto’s (and all thyroid problems) is to prescribe medication. Because most doctors don’t look for the root cause of the problem, the medication they prescribe artificially makes your thyroid lab numbers look good. All the while, your immune system continues to attack and destroy your thyroid gland, and your health coninues to decline.

If you don’t uncover the ROOT CAUSE of your symptoms, your health will get worse.

  • Have you ever walked away from doctors’ appointments feeling utterly discouraged and hopeless?
  • Have you ever been told that nothing is wrong with you— that your symptoms are “all in your head”?

If you experience any ongoing symptoms, it is a sign from your body that something isn’t right. It deserves to be investigated. If you have a nail in your hand, you don’t just take aspirin— you need to remove the nail!

There is hope

  • What if you had more energy?
  • What if you didn’t have a racing heart or panic attacks?
  • What if your memory were clearer?
  • What if you felt better?
  • What if you had an in-depth look at your body’s systems, you knew which ones were good and which were struggling, and you had a clear plan to improve your health overall?

I know these things are possible for you.

I know this because I’ve helped hundreds of patients with thyroid problems. The conventional approach isn’t working— my patients start healing and enjoying the best health they’ve ever had.

When people follow the functional medicine approach and find the root cause of their health problems, the results are amazing.

Renee’s Story

Let me give you an example. Renee* had been struggling with fatigue, hair loss, and feeling cold for about two years. No matter what she did, she couldn’t lose weight, either. She went to her regular doctor and to an endocrinologist. Her TSH and T4 levels were normal, so the doctors told her she was fine. When we ran her labs, we also looked at her Total T3 and Free T3. Both were low. That is why she was having hypothyroid symptoms. (This is a pattern called Underconversion, and it is the most common pattern I see in my office. This pattern is also not corrected by the common prescriptions.) We assessed the root causes of why Renee was underconverting her T4 into T3. We found that she was low in one of the co-factors needed for conversion and that her liver, which accounts for 60% of conversion in the body, needed some support. When we rechecked her labs 6 weeks later, her T3 levels had normalized and her symptoms were improving..

How functional medicine approaches thyroid conditions

Functional Medicine looks at thyroid health differently than conventional medicine.

  • What if we asked why is the thyroid out of balance?
  • How do we help it heal?

Functional medicine is about finding the root causes (rather than masking symptoms) to get you enjoying your life again.

Your thyroid system is complex – there are actually six patterns of hypothyroidism. In order to assess the six patterns of thyroid dysfunction, we order more tests than just a TSH, and we use a tighter range than conventional testing to uncover the problems.

I check these tests for all of my patients:

  • TSH
  • Total & Free T4
  • Total & Free T3
  • T3 Uptake
  • Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies (TPOAb)
  • Thyroglobulin Antibodies (TgAb)

Also, all of my patients are checked for Hashimoto’s. If you have it, we look for the 8 common triggers of autoimmune conditions to help calm your immune system and slow the destruction of your thyroid.

When it comes to thyroid support, we look at the big picture.

  • Which of the 6 patterns of hypothyroidism is involved?
  • How do we heal your struggling systems so you become healthier?
  • How do we heal your struggling systems so you become healthier?
  • How do we heal your struggling systems so you become healthier?
  • Are you getting enough of the nutritional requirements for a healthy thyroid, like selenium, manganese, zinc, iodine, iron, or the amino acid tyrosine?
  • Is fluoride & chlorine exposure impairing your thyroid hormone production?
  • What is the health of your gut & liver health (these affect how much active thyroid hormone you make)?
  • Do you have chronic stress, hormonal imbalances, sugar handling problems like insulin resistance or hypoglycemia, all which could be affecting your thyroid function?

Can you see how a thyroid problem isn’t JUST a thyroid problem? Our bodies are complex and interconnected, so one struggling system will impair other systems.
